Coniston is an old mining village and retains many of the characteristics of self-help and strong community spirit of such villages.
In 2006 a Housing Needs Survey demonstrated a proven need for 66 affordable homes in the village. This started an energetic community-led campaign to meet this requirement.
A working group was formed consisting of villagers, officers from the Planning and Housing authorities and representatives of local housing associations. By 2010 work was well underway to complete 22 affordable homes in the parishes of Coniston and Torver.
In 2012 the housing group set up Coniston & Torver Community Land Trust.
This means that from the experience we have gained since 2006, we are able to get more involved in schemes, and apply for more funding and grants to enable us to continue to provide affordable houses for village people.
Further schemes are in progress.
